Found Baby Rat

Co-workers found this little baby outside on Thursday and no one wanted to get rid of it, so they decided to give it to me (since the last thing found at work was a kitten that became my cat-I know..I'm such a sucker.) Thank goodness for the internet, I found out it was not a baby possum or raccoon, it was a baby rat approximately a week old, and read up on how to take care of it with helpful advice from friends too. Boy did I wish I wasn't such a softie! So here I am, three days later, still caring for this tiny little critter. Of course I can't keep it, it'll have to grow up to be a wild animal, and released eventually. For now, I will try to make it's stay as comfortable as I can but yes, I am using gloves.

In other news, it has been seriously 5 months or more since I've posted anything! I've had a busy holiday season between Thanksgiving, our annual Disneyland trip, Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries and Easter too! Whew, off to drawing!

  2. Wonderful painting, great colors. I am not sure that I could have taken in a rat, but this is a kind of cute baby. They sell rats in the pet stores for pets, so maybe you don't have to return it to the outside world.

  4. Well, I think you will just have to keep your little friend. Surely you can't paint his/her picture and then put him/her out! Next thing will be choosing a name.....
Great sketch - you have really captured that 'naked' look.

  5. It's nice to see you back! As for the baby rat .... I want to get a goat, but my sweetie says no because he's sure I'll give it a room of it's own. He's probably right! lol Good for you for your rescue work and, btw, it's darling! nancy

  6. Nice picture of the little rat! Why don't you ask the wildlife experts about keeping it. I've (my kids) had pet rats and they do make fun pets, at least the white lab rats. I enjoyed feeding them treats like popcorn and veggies. The kids liked to carry them on their shoulders which made me worry they'd get lost in the house somewhere.

  7. Thanks everyone! Unfortunately the little guy did not make it :( but I agree they're wonderful pets. I know the vet recommends not taking in stray wild animals...And Nancy my husband said he had goats when he was a child, and said they're great pets-maybe look for a miniature breed?

  8. That baby rat is adorable, I'm sad to read he didn't survive. You couldn't have kept it anyway since you already have a cat... I hear that rats are very intelligent and make affectionate pets. Great drawing, too, by the way - and I'm glad to see you post again!
